What is Fortnite?
Last verified: Oct 14, 2026
Fortnite is Epic Games' free-to-play game. Battle Royale is the best-known mode. It also hosts thousands of "islands" made by creators in Fortnite Creative and Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), and its currency is V-Bucks.
How it works
- Islands made by other creators sit alongside Epic's own modes and can carry their own content ratings.
- Epic gives under-13s (or under the local age of digital consent) a "Cabined" account with features like voice chat and purchases off until a parent consents.
What parents should know
- Voice and text chat with strangers in parties and matches.
- Spending V-Bucks. The FTC took action over Fortnite purchases (refunds page linked).
- Scams promising free V-Bucks.
None of this means the platform is unsafe by default. It's why the controls exist and why they're worth ten minutes to set up.
Why it's rated the way it is
Ratings cover Epic's game. Online interactions and creator islands sit outside that rating, so Epic's parental controls matter.
